The short version
A more capable camera, not an instant printer
The instax Pal 2 is a substantial redesign: it adds a viewfinder and screen, 10 MP and 1 MP capture modes, autofocus, closer focusing, twice the offline shot allowance and fast USB image transfer. It is also roughly twice the weight of the original Pal—and still needs a separate instax device if you want a physical print.

- Pal 2 records either 3776 × 2832-pixel (10 MP mode) or 1280 × 960-pixel (1 MP mode) JPEGs.
- It adds single autofocus, face-detection autofocus, an optical viewfinder and a top LCD screen.
- The camera can hold up to 100 untransferred shots, twice the original Pal's stated limit.
- USB Type-C now transfers images as well as charging the camera; Bluetooth transfer remains available.
- It still does not contain a film printer. Printing requires a compatible Link printer or supported hybrid instax camera, sold separately.
? Still unresolved
- Fujifilm has not published a shots-per-charge battery figure on the specification page checked.
- The U.S. announcement calls the screen 1.0 inch while the global specification table says 1.30 inches; this report does not choose between them.
- Prices, exact sale dates, stock and warranty terms remain unconfirmed for countries not named in the regional sources below.
- An overseas listing does not by itself establish local warranty coverage for an imported unit.
- Image quality and handling have not been hands-on tested by Japan Product Radar.
This comparison uses Fujifilm’s current specification pages for both generations. It does not treat the company’s image-quality claims as an independent performance test.

The new camera changes more than styling. The narrower 28 mm-equivalent view, autofocus and 8 cm minimum shooting distance make it a different framing tool from the original’s very wide 16.25 mm-equivalent view. The tradeoff is a body that is longer and 46 g heavier.

Fujifilm North America calls the Pal 2 screen 1.0 inch, while the global specification table says 1.30-inch TFT. Until Fujifilm reconciles those pages, the safe conclusion is simply that Pal 2 has a review screen; its exact diagonal is unresolved.

What you need to make a print
Pal 2 is a digital capture device. It contains no film pack and no print mechanism. Fujifilm’s specification table lists the following current destinations; the printer or hybrid camera, its app where applicable, and matching film are separate purchases.

The official FAQ says you can select a saved photo in the camera’s playback menu and print over Bluetooth, or send it through the Pal app. The app is not mandatory for basic camera use, but it is needed for remote shooting, loading different effect sets and phone-based transfer or editing. Printer compatibility alone is therefore a weak reason to replace an original Pal, which already supports several Link printers.

Black and white are the two announced colors. Do not convert one region’s price into a promised local price: retailer stock, tax, shipping, import duty and warranty handling remain country-specific.
Buy or keep
The practical upgrade decision
- Upgrade for framing and review.The viewfinder and screen address the original Pal’s biggest guess-first limitation without requiring a phone after every shot.
- Upgrade for closer or higher-resolution captures.Pal 2 adds autofocus, focuses from 8 cm and records a 10 MP file; those are concrete hardware changes, not filter additions.
- Keep the original for minimum size and weight.The first Pal is approximately 41 g versus 87 g, and its body is much shorter in its longest dimension.
- Do not upgrade only to print.Neither generation prints by itself, and the original already works with mini, SQUARE and WIDE Link workflows.
- Wait if image quality is the deciding factor.The larger sensor specification and higher pixel count are confirmed, but this desk report has not tested output quality.
For a first-time buyer who wants a screen-free-style camera without completely blind framing, Pal 2 is the clearer fit. For an existing Pal owner satisfied with its wide view and small body, printer support alone does not justify replacing it.
