Yamaha FG7 vs FS7: All 8 Models Decoded

The short version

Three choices produce eight model codes

Choose the body first: the larger FG dreadnought or the smaller FS concert. Then choose R for Indian rosewood or M for African mahogany. Add X only if you need Yamaha's factory Atmosfeel pickup system. Japan has a confirmed October 3 launch; Yamaha's checked sources do not yet give an official date or price for other markets.

This is a specification and availability comparison, not an instrument review. Yamaha's descriptions of projection and tonal character are identified as manufacturer claims, not independent listening results.

Model decoder

Read each reference from left to right

FG or FS names the body. The letter after7 names the back and side wood: R for rosewood or M for mahogany. A final Xmeans Atmosfeel electronics and a line output. Without X, Yamaha's specification table lists no electronics or connection.

Body and fit

FS is 32 mm narrower and uses a shorter scale

The body prefix changes measurable fit, not just Yamaha's tonal positioning. FS is 32 mm narrower, 10 mm shallower at both ends and uses a scale 16 mm shorter than FG. Both retain the same published 44 mm nut width, so choosing FS does not mean choosing a narrower neck at the nut.

Yamaha positions FG for forceful strumming and FS for responsive, detailed arpeggios. Those are useful design intentions, not a substitute for playing both. The specification table gives no weight, and this desk report cannot determine shoulder reach, neck feel or balance for an individual player.

Tonewood choice

R costs ¥22,000 more than M in Japan

The wood letter changes solid back and side material; every model retains a solid Sitka spruce top. Yamaha describes Indian rosewood R models as having full lows and rich harmonics, while it describes African mahogany M models as having a warm midrange and rounded overtones. These are Yamaha's characterizations, not findings from our own audition.

The R premium is identical across FG and FS and across acoustic and X versions. Treat ¥22,000 as the cost of that material choice in Yamaha's Japan list, not evidence that one version will suit a voice, arrangement or recording setup better.

X adds Atmosfeel for ¥77,000 in Japan

For every matching body and wood combination, the X version carries a ¥77,000 Japan premium. Yamaha specifies a piezo sensor under the saddle, an internal microphone and a contact sensor, with Master Volume, Mic Blend and Bass EQ controls. The X versions also include a soundhole cover; every version includes a hardshell case.

Regional status

Japan timing is exact; other markets are not

Yamaha's Japanese announcement states October 3, 2026 and publishes tax-included prices for all eight models. The global announcement names the lineup but gives no country-specific date or price. An official Canadian overview and specification table are live, which confirms product information for that regional site but not stock, dealer allocation or an on-sale date.

A leading result currently shows affiliate retailer prices, but those are not a substitute for an official regional MSRP or dealer availability. Confirm the exact reference, delivered price, setup, returns and warranty route with an authorized seller in your own country before considering a cross-border order.

A practical five-step shortlist

1. Start with body fit.Compare the 412 mm FG and 380 mm FS widths while seated and standing. The shared 44 mm nut means the body is the larger ergonomic difference on paper.
2. Match the body to the arrangement.Yamaha positions FG toward strumming and low-end projection and FS toward detailed arpeggios. Audition both with your own voice or ensemble before treating that guidance as a verdict.
3. Audition R and M instead of ranking them.They share the core dimensions and hardware. The Japan list prices R ¥22,000 higher, but price does not settle which tonal balance fits a player.
4. Add X only for a real output need.Atmosfeel is the functional difference. Budget the ¥77,000 Japan premium when direct amplification matters.
5. Wait for a local listing when support matters.Non-Japan dates, official prices, stock and warranty handling were unresolved on the checked pages. A regional product page alone is not proof that dealers can deliver the instrument.
